About

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless ailment in which areas of the skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin.

Causes

There are several different types and causes of hyperpigmentation, including liver spots, solar lentigines, chloasma, and freckles. Changing hormones in the body during pregnancy or the use of birth control pills can cause hyperpigmentation. It can also be caused by acne, other skin wounds and too much sun exposure. Some types of hyperpigmentation, including freckles, are genetic.

Risk Factors

Those who do not take proper care of their skin while in the sun or those who are pregnant or using birth control pills are at a greater risk for some types of hyperpigmentation. Having a blood relative with freckles will make a person more at risk to have hyperpigmentation as well.

Diagnosis

Lichen Planus is diagnosed by a physical exam of the skin by a doctor and a possible biopsy. Blood tests may be administered. Lichen Planus can be found in the mouth by a dentist during an appointment as well.
